UPAABC Celebrates Milestones and Inspires Change at Padayon, UP! Event

Vancouver, Canada — On February 22, 2025, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in British Columbia (UPAABC) gathered at the Holiday Inn Metrotown for an evening of celebration, reflection, and forward-thinking at their Padayon, UPAABC! event. With the theme “Stepping Forward in Building Communities & Inspiring Change,” the event showcased the association’s commitment to fostering partnerships and volunteerism while honouring its ongoing impact on various communities.

The evening began with a warm welcome for attendees during the cocktail reception, accompanied by light refreshments and music from a Filipino instrumental/acoustic set. Guests mingled, enjoyed the photo wall, and viewed a digital exhibit highlighting UPAABC’s key milestones. This was a perfect opportunity for alumni, partners, and potential collaborators to reconnect and share their experiences.

The official program kicked off with a performance of Filipino music by local artists Ian Zeta, Dave Dagta, and Pat Fernandez. Following the cultural performance, UPAABC President Stephen Andrada addressed the audience with a video message, underscoring the importance of collaboration in achieving the association’s mission. The message also acknowledged attendees and key supporters who contributed to UPAABC’s success.

One of the evening’s highlights was the keynote speech by Ambassador Maria Andrelita Austria, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Canada. In her speech, Austria emphasized the power of partnerships and volunteerism in creating positive, sustainable change. Her words resonated deeply with the attendees, reminding them of each individual’s vital role in community-building efforts.

A video presentation that celebrated the association’s various initiatives further showcased UPAABC’s impact on Filipino communities across Canada. These included the cultural enrichment provided by the Balagtasan and Pinoy Festival, educational mentorship programs and technical workshops, community service projects like the Door is Open program, scholarships, and charity concerts. Testimonials from volunteers, beneficiaries, and partners highlighted the transformative influence of these programs.

The Recognition & Appreciation Ceremony was a key event segment where UPAABC honoured its supporters, volunteers, and sponsors. These individuals and organizations have played a pivotal role in the association’s mission of serving the Filipino community and beyond.

Looking to the future, the event also featured the launch of UPAABC’s 2025 activities. Attendees were introduced to upcoming projects, offering opportunities for participation and partnership in the association’s initiatives. UPAABC’s focus on innovation and engagement promises to inspire continued involvement in its community-driven endeavours.

The event culminated with a call to action from UPAABC’s VP for Membership and Engagement, John Argayosa, who encouraged guests to continue supporting the association’s mission.

The night ended with a celebratory toast and the singing of the UP Naming Mahal, marking another successful chapter in UPAABC’s journey. The evening highlighted the association’s accomplishments and its continued dedication to making a lasting impact through volunteerism, partnerships, and community-building efforts.
