SURREY, BC – The Philippine National Softball team edged out Czechoslovakia in a match Friday (July 15) as part of the ongoing World Softball Championship.
The Philippine team, also known as the Philippine Blu Girls, fashioned a 1-0 victory at the Softball City South Surrey Athletic Park.
The team’s win was welcomed by coach Randy Dizer, who said that this gives the national squad an edge in the coming days.
“This win gave us a big chance to be on the round 16,” Dizer said.
The team made the score on the 4th inning when Garie Blando made a base hit and a sacrifice fly ball hit by Angeli ursabia that gave Blando to home base.
The Philippine team’s victory was also the result of the superb performance of pitcher Mary Ann Antolihao, who shut out Czechoslovakia, said Ismael Veloso, Head of Delegation and pitching coach Ron Pagkaliwagan.
The Philippine Blu Girls are the reigning champions in Southeast Asian Games 2015. The team is in Canada to compete in the world championship series from July 14 to July 25 with a 31 countries competed.
The Philippine team will go up against Pakistan on Saturday (July 16) at 10 a.m. The game will be staged at Diamond 1 of Softball City South Surrey Athletic Park, 2201 148 Street.
“Winning tomorrow’s game against Pakistan will guarantee us on the round 16,” and the next game is another important game against Netherland on Sunday July 17, 10 a.m. Diamond 2, coach Dizer said.
