Tattoo Artist Mayo Landicho Presents Artwork at Vancouver’s Lantern Festival

Giant Lunar New Year lanterns are returning to Vancouver for a free festival at Robson Plaza, on display from January 29 to February 19, to celebrate the Lunar New Year – Year of the Snake with a beautiful display of artistry.

Among the featured artists is Mayo Landicho, a well-known Filipino tattoo artist. Humble and grateful, Mayo is thrilled to be selected for this prestigious event for the second time.
Mayo Landicho, along with nine other tattoo artists from across Canada, was commissioned to create designs reflecting the Year of the Snake. His giant lantern piece is titled “Armour of the Serpiyente”.

For Filipinos, the snake is a powerful symbol linked to the legendary hero Banna. As a tattoo, it serves not only as a protective talisman—shielding women from the spirits of enemies involved in the Lalapuan (blood feud)—but also as a representation of fertility and the creative life force.

Mayo drew inspiration from traditional Filipino tribal tattoo patterns, incorporating motifs that symbolize courage, strength, and resilience into the intricate design of the snake’s skin. These authentic patterns can be found throughout the Philippines, making his work a proud tribute to his heritage.
