  • *Vancouver, Canada – November 1, 2024* – Vancouver’s The Centre became a vibrant hub of music and nostalgia on November 1st, as Filipino rock band The Itchyworms took to the stage for a performance that had fans singing, dancing, and reliving some of the most unforgettable moments in Pinoy rock history. The concert was a night of great music and a testament to the power of cultural connection through song.

The Itchyworms, known for their catchy tunes, heartfelt lyrics, and timeless anthems, delivered an electrifying performance that spanned their decades-long career. From the moment the lights dimmed, and the opening chords of ‘Akin Ka Na Lang’ echoed through the venue, it was clear this wasn’t just another concert—it was an emotional reunion of Filipino-Canadians and music lovers who have followed the band since its early days in the late ‘90s.

A Celebration of Filipino Identity and Community

For many attendees, the concert was more than just about the music—it celebrated Filipino identity and the vibrant Filipino community in Vancouver. As the crowd cheered, Itchyworms frontman Jugs Jugueta and bandmates Jazz Nicholas, Chino Singson, Kelvin Yu, and Mikey Amistoso took their positions, ready to bring the house down.

“It’s always amazing to play for our kababayans (countrymen), especially here in Canada, where we’ve been blessed with such a warm, welcoming community,” said Jugs, his voice full of gratitude. “We know that music brings us all together no matter where we are.”

Songs like ‘Sana,’ ‘Beer,’ and ‘Di Na Mababawi’ had the crowd swaying, clapping, and singing in unison as though the band had been a part of their lives for decades. The energy in the venue was palpable, with each song reverberating through the air, sparking memories of younger days and reminding everyone of the power of music to evoke emotion.

A Journey Through Time and Sound

The Itchyworms’ setlist was a careful mix of their greatest hits, fan favourites, and a few surprise tracks that kept the audience on their toes. Classic songs from their breakthrough album “Noontime Show” were given new life in a live setting. Their signature sound—a unique blend of pop, rock, and Filipino sensibilities—was in full force. Still, the band’s willingness to experiment with arrangements and instrumentation performed a fresh and exciting twist.

One of the night’s standout moments came during ‘Penge Naman Ako Nyan’, a song that resonates deeply with fans who have followed the band’s personal and professional growth journey.

    A Night of Connection

While the music took center stage, the Itchyworms connected with the crowd in a way only valid artists can. Between songs, they shared stories of their journey from humble beginnings in the Philippines to becoming a staple in the Filipino music scene. The humour, camaraderie, and warmth that the band exuded made the experience feel like an intimate gathering of friends rather than a grand performance by an international act.

In a touching moment, Jugs dedicated a song to the Filipino youth, urging them to stay true to their roots and remember the value of community. “We hope tonight’s concert is not just about the music,” he said, “but also about creating memories and experiences that we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives.”

Beyond the Concert: The Impact of Music

The Itchyworms’ Vancouver concert is more than just a milestone for the band; it reflects the growing cultural influence of Filipino artists worldwide. In cities like Vancouver, where the Filipino population continues to grow, the performance was a poignant reminder of how far Filipino music has come and continues to thrive and evolve. It was a testament that Filipino music, much like the Filipino spirit, knows no borders.

As the final notes of ‘Love Team’ rang out into the night, the audience stood, applauding, cheering, and shouting for an encore that felt like the perfect conclusion to a truly unforgettable evening. The Itchyworms had rocked Vancouver and created a lasting bond with their fans that will endure for years.

With their unwavering dedication to their craft and passion for connecting with their fans, the Itchyworms proved once again that their music is more than just entertainment; it’s a powerful force that unites, inspires, and brings joy to all who experience it. (MBB)
