  • Game Changer!

Sports can be a great equalizer. News of some women participating in a typical marathon foot race normally won’t cause much of a stir. Ah, but if the race takes place in a country known for its hostility towards women that perspective can change dramatically. Get insight into the bravery some young women convey by watching The Secret Marathon. See a champion on the field and off strut her stuff in this courageous documentary. Available for a limited time over the internet thanks to Pender PR be sure to reserve your exclusive screening by going to ca.demand.film. The film will be shown on Jan. 29-Jan. 31.

Good news travels fast. Any way you slice it Afghanistan is a dangerous place. Steeped in history, tradition and constant conflict and confrontation being young in this Desert Kingdom can be daunting. And if you’re a woman thing are even tougher.

When News leaks out that Zainab, a young girl is training in secret for The Afghan Marathon it sets off shock waves in the local community and abroad.

Far away in England an elderly Brit with a passion for running learns of this unique race. Not exactly the picture of good health but ready to lend his moral and physical support to the challenge is Martin Parnell.

Through good fortune a Canadian filmmaker learns of this race and the story behind it. More surprisingly she meets Martin and the two forge a plan to film the actual race.
From Alberta with Love, we go as director Kate McKenzie beefs up, slims down and does her best not only to film the momentous race but also to run in it. After months of hard training Kate makes the difficult decision to leave Alberta and travel to Afghanistan by way of Turkey, all going against a Canadian travel advisory no less. Once in this fabled region the movie really kicks in as we see the dangers of being in the race while exploring the local geography and witnessing various Afghan customs.

Uplifting and inspiring here’s a film that shows people from different backgrounds and ethnicities (and sexes) can indeed come together. Running is like freedom and The Secret Marathon shows that if you are determined and true to your heart you can do anything.(Robert Waldman)
