This year, 2 films telling stories of Filipino characters are playing at the upcoming Vancouver
International Film Festival. Paris Zarcilla’s Raging Grace and Seán Devlin’s Asog will be shown
during the 42nd edition of VIFF! The Vancouver International Film Festival is one of the 5
largest film festivals in North America and continues to be a fall highlight for the city’s
cinephiles. Now, let’s take a closer look at the films that will be playing and their director’s.
Paris Zarcilla’s Raging Grace played at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March of this year and was
named the Winner of the SXSW Grand Jury Award and Thunderbird Rising Award at the 2023
SXSW Festival. While that is exciting enough for the young writer-director, Raging Grace is his
debut film!
Raging Grace is playing on Friday, October 6 at The Rio Theatre and on Sunday, October 8 at
Cineplex International Village.
Seán Devlin, creator of Asog, has had films presented at Cannes Docs, Tribeca, Cairo and Sao
Paulo International Film. He is also a winner of 2 previous VIFF jury awards, Best Director and
the Emerging Canadian Director prize.
Asog is described as, “beautiful, sorrowful, comedic, and political, sometimes all at the same
time.”
Asog is showing on Saturday, September 30th at SFU Woodwards and Sunday, October 1 at The
Rio Theatre.
Following the lead of Paco and Leonor Will Never Die from last year’s VIFF, Raging Grace and
Asog are ready to show Vancouver the growth and development of Pinoy film making around
the world. The festivities begin on September 28 and run until October 8. You can buy tickets
packs or tickets for individual shows at VIFF.org/ticket-info/(Julian-Ray Fortaleza)
