Asia’s first Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre will make an appearance as the guest speaker during the formal opening of the 7th edition of the Makati Chess Club (MCC) Inter-Youth Chess Tournament on April 22 at the Makati Youth Center in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati City. Torre, the founding president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play chess and even share his secrets for his rise as one of the world’s top players during his time.
“GM Eugene is the perfect choice to be our guest speaker since most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol, aside from our very own GM Wesley (So),” said MCC president Atty. Vicente “Vic” Aceveda, who organized the chess tournament.
The youth chess competition is a team event, with each teams composed of three players. The teams play in a seven-round Swiss system with 40 allotted movements. There are prizes and trophies for the top three finishers in the college, high school and elementary categories.(mb.com)
