I know how it feels, trust me. The difference is that I was a reluctant electee and will always have to bring that up! Kuya Stephen Andrada embraced the role with all his heart, pre-conditioned his mind, and allowed his positive aura to surround us with his calm, collaborative, and fantastic leadership demeanour.
When I did this interview, I knew it would be awesome! Little did I know I’d keep my mouth gaping in awe as I read through his responses. The bottom line is that I did my best to summarize everything he said beautifully. Again, I hope this column will justify the promising 2025 and 2026 that await the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in BC under Incoming President Stephen Andrada.
As the incoming President of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in British Columbia (UPAABC), Kuya Stephen is deeply humbled by the opportunity to lead such a remarkable community. His journey through the University of the Philippines (UP) was marked by personal growth, academic rigour, and a commitment to social responsibility — all values that have shaped the person he is today. Stepping into this new role, he carries the lessons from UP, which continue to inspire him to live with purpose, honour, and service. In assuming this responsibility, he mentions that his goal is to continue building on the legacy of UPAABC and create a future where our alums are successful and serve as agents of positive change in the larger community.
Building on a Legacy: Strengthening Ties with UP
The University of the Philippines has long been a beacon of academic excellence and leadership in the Philippines and abroad. It is more than just an educational institution; UP nurtures individuals who understand leadership is about personal achievement and service to others. The UPAABC community reflects these core principles, and as President, Kuya Stephen is committed to deepening the connection between our alums here in British Columbia and the university we hold dear.
UPAABC is a vital link between UP and the broader Canadian society, and he envisions it as more than just a network for professional advancement. It is a platform for fostering collaboration, building meaningful partnerships, and engaging in initiatives that have a lasting impact on both our alums and the communities in which we live. He aims to strengthen this bridge by exploring new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as research, career development, and social outreach. Through these efforts, UPAABC can continue to honour UP’s mission of producing leaders who contribute to national and global progress.
Bridging Generations: A Unified Alumni Community
One of the most inspiring aspects of UPAABC is its diversity. Our alums span decades, industries, and backgrounds, each with unique experiences and valuable perspectives. However, this diversity is not just a feature but a strength. By fostering stronger connections across generations, we can ensure that the wisdom of seasoned professionals is passed on to younger alums and that newer graduates benefit from the insights and experiences of those who have paved the way.
A key initiative that exemplifies this is the “Employment Integration in BC Through Industry Mentorship” program. This initiative pairs newcomers with established professionals, easing their transition into Canadian society while fostering valuable career development. As the new President steps up into the role, he is committed to expanding this program, tapping into our seasoned alums’ wealth of knowledge and experience and encouraging younger members to contribute their perspectives. This two-way mentorship will not only enhance the career success of newcomers but will also enrich the broader UPAABC community.
Upholding the Core Values of UP: Academic Excellence and Social Responsibility
Its commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility is at the heart of UP’s legacy. As alums, we are the living embodiment of these values, and we must continue carrying them forward in all that we do. As president, “I will continue to champion initiatives that not only support our alumni but also give back to the community,” Kuya Stephen says.
One of the primary goals of Kuya Stephen’s leadership will be to expand our scholarship programs, ensuring that the next generation of Iskolar ng Bayan — UP scholars — have the resources they need to succeed. These scholarships are not just investments in individuals but in the future of our nation. By supporting these bright minds, we are helping to cultivate the leaders who will shape the future of the Philippines and the world.
Additionally, he is committed to furthering UPAABC’s involvement in social causes, especially those that advocate for Filipino heritage, migrant workers’ rights, and educational advancement. By partnering with organizations such as the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, initiatives that align with UP’s mission and make a tangible difference in the lives of Filipinos in BC and beyond are developed and put into practice.
Cultural Preservation in a Multicultural Society
Living in a diverse, multicultural society like British Columbia presents challenges and opportunities. While we embrace the richness of our new home, it is equally essential that we preserve and celebrate our Filipino heritage. UPAABC has long been at the forefront of cultural initiatives, such as the Balagtasan — a traditional Filipino poetry debate — and ongoing celebrations of Filipino Heritage Month [in partnership with UFCABC].
“ These events not only honour our roots but also create opportunities to share the beauty of Filipino culture with others,” Kuya Stephen further stresses. As President, he means to continue to advocate for cultural preservation and promotion. “By supporting initiatives highlighting Filipino identity and traditions, we strengthen our community and contribute to the broader Canadian cultural landscape. Our ability to celebrate and share our heritage is one of the many ways we can bridge cultures and foster greater understanding and respect in our multicultural society,” the gentleman radiantly said in such a calm manner that nobody could ever imitate!
Strengthening Global Ties and Empowering Future Leaders
Kuya Stephen explains that as alumni, we have a responsibility to help shape the future of our alma mater, especially in an increasingly interconnected world. UPAABC plays a crucial role in strengthening UP’s global presence, not just as a community of former students but also as a resource for the university to understand the global talent market. Our alums have successfully integrated into Canadian society and have become leaders in various fields, bringing their expertise and influence to bear on both local and international levels.
Looking ahead, “I aim to strengthen the relationship between UPAABC and UP, ensuring that we are actively involved in shaping the university’s global strategy. By sharing our insights and experiences, we can help align UP’s curriculum with the evolving demands of the international job market, ensuring that future graduates are equipped to succeed anywhere in the world,” he said.
A Collective Responsibility: Giving Back to the Community
At the heart of the UPAABC mission is giving back to the alumni community and the broader society. Our alum association is uniquely positioned to positively impact BC through social initiatives, educational programs, and charitable efforts. By remaining committed to our values of honour, excellence, and service, we can continue to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of our local community.
We must also remember that as alumni, we are stronger when we support one another. “By investing in each other’s success, we create a network of accomplished professionals dedicated to helping others thrive. This collective spirit makes UPAABC a powerful force for good, and I hope to nurture it throughout my term as President,” Kuya Stephen continued.
Moving Forward with Honor, Excellence, and Service
As Kuya Stephen Andrada assumes the presidency of UPAABC, he is reminded of the lessons he learned during his time at UP—that no effort is too small when it is made with integrity, dedication, and a sense of service.
He confidently pronounced:
“UP taught me the importance of standing up for what is right, working toward a shared vision, and always striving for excellence.
In the years to come, I will carry these lessons forward as we work to create a successful alum community that is deeply committed to serving others. Together, we will continue UP’s legacy—one built on honour, excellence, and a profound sense of responsibility to the community.
Mabuhay ang Iskolar ng Bayan! Padayon!” (MBB)
