Angkas aims for its new four-wheeled service to be ‘second best’

  • A popular motorcycle ride-hailing app said it wanted to be the “second best” when it comes to offering four-wheeled transport network vehicle services.

    Angkas on October 7 announced that commuters can now try Angcars, their service offering cars as transportation.

    “Beta pa lang ‘to so ‘wag muna kayo masyado mag-expect,” its social media post said.

    “Beta” refers to a nearly complete prototype of a product, such as software.

    Angkas said its goal is to make its Angcars the “second best” TNVS, acknowledging that other popular and more established ride-hailing services offer four-wheeled vehicles like Grab.

    “Pwede na kayo mag-book ng car rides sa Angkas app!” it said.

    Even before the announcement, Angcars’s app has been live as early as August.

    However, a report said it was only available for download in select cities in Metro Manila then.

    Last month, Angkas founder Angeline Xiwen Tham said the company plans to expand its new four-wheeled TNVS outside the capital region.

    There were also previous reports saying that the ride-hailing app wanted to introduce other variations of the service like Angcars Economy and Angcars Plus, which would allow passengers to request four-seater or six-seater vehicles, respectively.

    Following Uber‘s exit in 2018, there have been clamors for more TNVS offering four-wheeled vehicles to enter the public transportation system.

    Other options, apart from Grab, include Joyride, inDrive, PeekUp and UTOL.

    Last July, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board accredited 14 new transport network companies and renewed five existing ones. (9J. Malasig/ Interaksyon)
