City of Surrey takes significant steps to support Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Extension

Surrey, BC – During the Regular Council Meeting tonight, Surrey City Council will consider a lease agreement with Skylink Guideway Constructors General Partnership to facilitate vital construction efforts for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain (SLS) extension. A lease agreement is proposed for approximately 123,030 square meters of city-owned land located at 19526 – 24 Ave. and 19525 – 20 Ave. This land would serve as a Pre-Cast Yard for the SLS project.

“Surrey City Council is working to get the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension project built as quickly as possible,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This Pre-Cast Yard lease agreement will enable the province to speed up work on this critical project. Additionally, once operational, the Pre-Cast Yard will provide roughly 350 jobs in the Campbell Heights area. The SLS project isn’t merely a long-awaited transportation link; it’s a transformative investment in our future that will enhance mobility, reduce travel times, and propel Surrey’s economic growth.”

As part of the Province’s procurement process, Skylink was chosen as the successful proponent for the guideway contract and is tasked with the critical job of manufacturing and temporarily storing approximately 5,000 concrete guideway segments essential for the construction of the SkyTrain infrastructure. The proposed lease agreement permits Skylink to operate on the city land for 33 months, with an option to renew for an additional 36 months, allowing them to conduct necessary preparations and construction on-site.

The Pre-Cast Yard will include a pre-engineered steel building, concrete batch plant, storage areas, office space, and provisions for staging, ensuring an efficient workflow throughout the project duration.

Skylink is currently preparing the Lands by means of grading and earthworks pursuant to the issued TUP with the intention that the Lease would commence effective January 1, 2025. (amy.jugpal@surrey.ca)
