EDSA People Power@36: Lessons & Legacies with Sr. Mary John Mananzan

The Vancouver Coalition 4 Leni and Kiko 2022, in cooperation with 1Sambayan Canada Chapter, Bayan Canada and Malaya Canada, is hosting the online forum on the 36th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution with keynote speaker Sr. Mary John Mananzan, 1986 EDSA marcher.

On February 25, 1986, the Filipino “People Power Revolution” ended the 20-year rule of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Dictator Marcos was ousted from power and he and his family fled to Hawaii.

Known also as the EDSA Revolution, it was a sustained campaign of civil resistance and popular demonstrations against the atrocities of the Marcos dictatorship and against electoral fraud.  On the morning of February 25, Corazon Aquino was inaugurated as the 11th President of the Philippines.

What are the lessons of People Power? What are its legacies? What is its relevance to the May 9, 2022 Philippine national elections?

The dictator’s son, Ferdinand Marcos Jr is running for president in tandem with Sara Duterte as his running mate to restore the Marcoses back to Malacañang and continue the Dutertes’ hold on political power. Will the Filipino people allow this to happen?

Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB is our keynote speaker for “EDSA People Power @36: Lessons & Legacies” on February 25, 2022 at 7 :00 PM (Pacific time). It will be zooming from Vancouver, BC Canada and will connect Sr. Mary John from Manila (simultaneously at 11 AM of February 26, 2022, Philippine time).

Sr. Mary John will be joined in Vancouver by Chris Sorio, the current Chair of Bayan Canada and a torture victim and political prisoner during the Marcos martial rule.  From Los Angeles, realtor Danny Nicolas who graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University will share his story of being imprisoned in the same stockade in Camp Crame with the late Senator Jose Diokno.

Sister Mary John Mananzan, OSB was an original 1986 EDSA People Power marcher and activist who was among the nuns, students, workers and ordinary citizens who braved the military might including tanks and foot soldiers of the Marcos regime. She is currently the Vice President of External Affairs of St. Scholastica’s College and the Executive Director of the Institute of Women’s Studies.
