Lift Like a Girl (PG) ****

Pumping Iron!

Film buffs and body building aficionados may recall that Pumping Iron was the breakthrough breakout movie that helped put then unknown Austrian stallion Arnold Schwarzenegger on the map and road to superstardom. Helped enormously by the Montreal based gym entrepreneurs the Weider Brothers the rest, as they say, is history. How nice it would be that the same level of success was showered upon the women in Lift Like a Girl. Based on real people this insightful film comes your way courtesy of Route 504 PR. Order it on line from your local cable firm or internet provider for quite the treat.

Over the course of a few years Lift Like a Girl follows the meteoric rise of a group of young girls who learn how to become first class weightlifters. Largely confined to men somehow these girls learn the craft of pumping iron and in the process become champions to themselves, their family, their neighborhood and their country.

Set in Alexandria Egypt one must remember that this staunchly conservative nation was largely dominated by men with women relegated to also ran second class citizenry. Out to cut through this glass ceiling in the world of sport is Zebiba who is Taught by her relentlessly domineering coach Captain Ramadan. Full of spirit it’s great to see how this young girl over four years manages to take on all obstacles thrown her way.

Bound to strike a responsive chord director Mayye Zayed does a great job portraying this tale of a group of girls from a poverty corner who manage to learn the art of bodybuilding and make it their own(Robert Waldman).
