Vancouver’s Sweetheart of Songs is hosting the first Filipino Canadian celebrity talk show in Vancouver. The arrival of the show Pinoy Buzz Vancouver is just timely. The community in Vancouver is blessed with having several local newspapers like Philippine News Today, the Philippine Asian Chronicle, Philippine Journal, and Planet Philippines. For many years, these papers have provided readers with news here and in the Philippines. Then came Pinoy Buzz! Vancouver Edition, the magazine that offered an inside look into the world of Pinoy show business as well as, cooking, fashion and music. After putting up the glossy magazine in Vancouver, Janice Lozano and her team felt that the time is right to put up a television show that would bring the magazine to life thru moving visuals, actual video clips and in-depth interviews. Being a local entertainer, known to many in the Lower Mainland as Vancouver’s Sweetheart of Songs, she is often asked when the most memorable moment in her life has been thus far.

Lozano says: “Was it when I shared the spotlight with the likes of Kuh Ledesma, Rey Valera, Gabby Concepcion, Jojo Abellana, April Boys, Jocelyn Enriquez, Side A, Freestyle and Martin Nievera (to name but a few) ? Or perhaps, it was during my short stint with film back in 1996, when I was featured on “Kumakasa, Lumalaban,” starring Rommel Padilla? Not to sound ambiguous, but it is truly hard to say. There are so many wonderful moments to look back upon and forward to that it is difficult to narrow it down to just one.”

Then came the idea for the TV show.

“What I do know is that during these performances in Canada, the United States, and back home, the Philippines, I established long time relationships with many established Pinoy stars, as well as, notable people in the entertainment industry,” Lozano says.

“I was able to know the real people behind the limelight...
behind the fame and glory. This situation gave me a unique perspective in seeing the person inside the celebrity: the way they lived their daily lives, what they thought about, their trials and tribulations, and how they dealt with their adoring fans. I became enamored in, what I like to call, the BUZZ of the business,” she also says.

“So in revisiting the earlier question, “what is the most memorable moment in my life as an entertainer?” I would have to say all of the above, for it is exciting to be able to bring the limelight to the most forgotten component of show biz—the fans. Without you there is no entertainment industry. And what makes a fan, a fan, is the desire to know the latest chismis regarding our stars and celebrities from back home and abroad. We enjoy talking about our movies and favorite T.V. shows. It is our national pastime, especially since we live so far away from our homeland,” Lozano adds. “I know, because no matter where my career may take me, I will never stop being a fan,” she notes.

And that’s the inside scoop on how the TV show Pinoy Buzz Vancouver started, and did we mention that PBV is the first Filipino-Canadian celebrity talk show in Vancouver? You bet it is! Get your weekly dose of Pinoy chismis, Fil-Can newsmakers and the latest events in the community every Monday on Shaw Multi-Cultural Channel 119 at 9:30pm. The first episode will air on February 8, 2011.

If we intend to make our interest be recognized, all we need to do is make a noise about it! One may either write or talk about a certain issue. This is exactly what happened last weekend. In Vancouver, a Filipino parade entitled ‘Unang Hirit’ showcasing Filipino culture created a big noise. Some claimed it was the biggest and colorful parade organized by Filipinos. A street parade starting from Fraser, Multicultural Helping House to St. Patrick Church ground at Main Street where trade exhibits, food stalls and entertainment shows were held. Many claimed it was successful! We hope the organizers have a chance to evaluate the event turn out and how they can still improve by showcasing positive, significant and unique contributions of Filipinos to the Vancouver community.

I went walking one day, on a beach that was filled with people from all walks of life. Families with small children running and playing with each other. Sweethearts who had only eyes for each other. Solitary beings who where out to enjoy the Sun and be alone with oneself. Whatever reasons all of us congregate on the beach that day, one prevailing agreement was that all of us, were enjoying ourselves.

Last Saturday Aug 14 was a significant event for the Filipino community in Vancouver as the first ever Filipino Cultural Street parade was launched. The most obvious purpose of this event, of course, is to reaffirm our presence as a united culture here in Vancouver, not that Canadians are not aware of this but perhaps to make them aware that we as a community can also make noise, louder, if not the same cacophonous noise as a Chinese Lion dance parade. But really, I thought this was more of a chance for the hundred or so local Filipino associations to do something worth-wile departing from the usual and already boring fund-raising dinner and dance, beauty pageants and singing idol wannabee competitions.

On, June 30, 2010, Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III was sworn in as the 15th president of the Republic of the Philippines. Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales and Jesuit Fr. Catalino Arevalo, a close friend of the Aquinos, who held the bible, swore in the only son of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and former president Corazon Cojuangco Aquino. To most Filipinos, this day was very memorable because it symbolizes the beginning of a new hope for the country, the hope of a clean and honest government.
