Is it really necessary for Philippine congressmen – consid­ering the enormous work that lay ahead in connection with reconstruction in typhoon-destroyed communities - to go to Las Vegas? This question is floating around the House of Representa­tives after it was reported that more or less 50 congressmen are bound for the U.S. to watch the much anticipated fight of the year.

Crime prevention needed on Commercial Street

Commercial Street in Van­couver is fast becoming a haven of violence after two reported crimes occurred in less than a month this October. In a span of two weeks, residents living within the vi­cinity were shocked with hor­rific events, which up to this time have not been resolved by police. It can be recalled that on the night of October 10 at about 11:45 pm in the corner of East 5th and Commercial, a man , believed to be a Fili­pino Canadian was set on fire by three male Caucasians.

Call for harsh penalty for hate crimes

Whether it’s a case of racial hatred or just simply a ran­dom attack, setting a man on fire is an act of complete evil and clearly a heinous crime. On October 10 at about 11:40 pm, an unsuspecting man believed to be Filipino-Canadian suffered burns af­ter three black-clad, tattooed and pierced Caucasian males set him on fire while he was taking a nap on an aban­doned couch outdoors. It occurred at the corner of Vancouver’s East 5th Avenue and Commercial Drive where the 26-year old man was burned.

The unbelievable wrath of typhoon Ondoy

Metro Manila has never seen a typhoon like it. In fact, I think that it is the first time that Metro Manila was declared in a State of Ca­lamity. Whether this is true or not, this is undoubtedly the worst floods that Manila has ever seen. The floodwa­ters did not choose whom to hit or where to go. Rich or poor, everyone was affected. The news and pictures are really very grim.
